Find your zen in the Mystical Temples of Kyoto
Very few places in the World radiate with tranquil vibes quite like Kyoto, Japan. As the former capitol of Japan, it is a huge city with a more traditional atmosphere than Tokyo. Kyoto is only a 3 hour Shinkansen (Bullet Train) ride away from Tokyo so its definitely worth the trip. The most prominent attractions in Kyoto are the plethora of oriental temples. There are plenty to choose from, so here’s my top 10 absolute must visit temples to find your inner peace.
10. Gion
Also known as the Geisha district, Gion is located in Kyoto City among a bunch of restaurants and bars. You’ll see a lot of women in traditional kimonos which adds to the ambiance. There a few cool shrines to visit, but this is probably the most modern area of Kyoto.
9. Kyoto Imperial Palace
Next up is Kyoto Imperial Palace, the former residence of the Emperor of Japan. The Palace is surrounded by a lovely park, which has lots of greenery and a few shrines. The main palace rests in the center of the park. You can visit inside by filling out an application and bringing you passport. Check out more info here.
8. Nijō Castle
Kyoto has no shortage of royal palaces, and another to add to the list is Nijō Castle. The castle is guarded by a huge fortified wall and contains the castle hiding within. Nijō Castle also has manicured gardens that are wonderful to behold.
7. Kasuga-Taisha
Technically not in Kyoto, but its close enough for a Day trip so still worth it. Kasuga-Taisha is a famous Shinto shrine in the Prefecture of Nara. It has a distinct crimson architecture that is very memorable. Kasuga-Taisha is also known for its eccentric lanterns, and a dark room that shines only with their light. This room alone makes it worth the visit.
6. Todaiji
Well while you’re here in Nara might as well stop by the largest Temple in Japan. Before you arrive you’ll walk through Nara Park, which its famous for it deer residents. You can actually walk up to the deer and feed them, just watch out for their antlers. Todaiji is an enormous temple and you’ll feel its magnitude as you approach it. Take some time to admire the Buddha statues along with its oriental design.
5. Kiyomizu-dera
Another Buddhist Temple right outside of Downtown, Kiyomizu-dera has great view of Kyoto Tower. Also known as an ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage site, the temple rests harmoniously within a natural setting. There are splendid views of the contrasting red colors and the surrounding forests. I recall a ton of steps so be prepared for a hike!
4. Ryōan-ji
The most famous zen temple with a rock garden, Ryōan-ji has the perfect atmosphere for some soul searching. I never thought a bunch of rocks being raked into perfectly symmetrical lines could be so relaxing.
3. Tenryū-ji and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Tenryū-ji is another ambient temple worth a visit, but the iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is an absolute must see while visiting Kyoto. Meandering through the forest gives some great scenery and photogenic spots. A word of caution for the summer months, there are a lot of mosquitoes. The worst of the creatures on this planet.
Tenryū-ji
2. The Silver Temple, Ginkaku-ji
Everything you can visualize about Kyoto can be summed up by Ginkaku-ji. Also known as the Silver Temple, it offers beautiful landscaped gardens, peaceful shrines, ancient architecture, and even a traditional tea house where you can indulge in some aromatic beverages. Don’t let the name fool you though, the temple isn’t really silver.
1. The Golden Temple, Kinkaku-ji
Finally the quintessential Kyoto temple experience, Kinkaku-ji. This luminous gold-plated temple completely shatters all expectations. It is truly a magnificent sight that must be seen in person to appreciate its euphoric presence. And as the name implies, this one is actually made with Gold. A mere photograph cannot capture all of its glory but I had to try anyway.
