Climbing to the Top of Pisa’s Slanted Spire
One of the world’s most iconic landmarks lies in the province of Pisa; none other than the leaning tower. Pisa may be a long journey from Rome (about 3 hours), but only a short-day trip (about 1 hour) from the aesthetic city of Florence. Piazza del Duomo is where the notorious Leaning Tower of Pisa lies. The plaza may be the focal point of interest in Pisa, but it’s still certainly worth the trip. Before having the joy of ascending another seemingly-infinite spiral staircase, check out these tips to help prepare you for seeing the top of Pisa.
Buying Tickets to the Leaning Tower of Pisa
With the influx of tourists visiting the site, it is required to book your tickets before the day of your trip. There is only a limited amount of time slots per day, so arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Be sure to print out your ticket before you get there. The purchase of your ticket includes entrance to the cathedral which is pretty cool. The tower’s hours are from 9:45 to 5:15pm.
Getting to the Tower
As mentioned above, the close proximity to the major city of Florence makes Pisa the perfect day trip. Buy a high speed train ticket from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Pisa Centrale to get there in no time. Once you get to the station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to reach the monument. Piazza del Duomo
Upon arrival you’ll notice a few basilicas and of course the Leaning Tower of Pisa when you reach the plaza. Take some time to pose for the obligatory Pisa picture. Its much harder than it looks to get those perfect angles. Tickets for the Baptistery and Camposanto cemetery are also available to purchase at the main booth. There are huge lines to go up the tower, but your tickets grant access to the front during the time window.
Climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa
They will not allow any kinds of bags inside the tower, so be sure to leave them at the checking room before waiting in line. You only get about 30 minutes to climb the tower, so enjoy every second! As you start the 251-stair ascent, be sure to pace yourself and embrace some views for a moment to regain your composure. When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views! There is a small passageway to the upper level where you can see the bell tower in all of its glory. The radiant white marble architecture is just as impressive as the incredible skyline. Of course, the other half of the battle is descending the tower, so mentally prepare for that.
