Delicious Detroit Food You Must Eat

The Detroit food scene is highly underrated. There is a plethora of great restaurants with flavors as innovative as the city itself. When you are done sightseeing some of the best things the city has to offer, check out these amazing signature meals and where to find them.

Detroit Style Pizza

As a New Yorker and a self proclaimed pizza expert, pizza was priority number 1 on the Detroit food tour. Made in a rectangular pan, it is topped with Wisconsin cheese and has a tomato based sauce. We tried it at the Birth place of Detroit style, Buddy’s. The first restaurant opened in 1946, and has expanded to several locations across the city. We tried the one in Downtown on Broadway Street and it was fantastic. It reminded me of a mix between Chicago deep dish and a New York slice. No trip to Detroit is complete without trying the pizza.

Mom’s Spaghetti

Newcomer to the Detroit food scene is Eminem’s very own restaurant; Mom’s Spaghetti. The restaurant is a mix of nostalgia, old school hip-hop, and spaghetti. While the noodles themselves can’t compete with Italian cuisine, the affordable price, hefty portion size, and retro vibe of the restaurant’s atmosphere is awesome. There is definitely great value here, especially for fans of the original Slim Shady. Find it downtown on Woodward Ave. right next to the Fox Theater.

Coney Island Hot Dog

We’re a long way from New York, but still the city’s sphere of influence penetrates the Detroit food scene. The Coney Dog is a beef Frankfurter in natural casing, topped with an all meat, beanless chili, diced onions, and yellow mustard all in a steamed bun. The top 2 restaurants to serve it are the American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island, which ironically stand right next to each other. We tried both in a taste testing comparison and they are about equal. The quality is great and even stands up to the Chicago Style Hot dog.

Pie Scie Pizza

An Honorable mention goes out to Pie Sci Pizza, for their ingenuity behind the menu. Totally different than Detroit style, Pie Sci offers a bold and inventive variety including diary-free, gluten-free, or vegetarian options. It is a great spot if you want to mix up the traditional flavors you’ll find everywhere else. Plus the ambiance is a quirky and vibrant reflection of the business’s creativity. Unorthodox but flavorful.

Detroit food includes some interesting and inventive flavors that can compete against other great food cities. Foodies will definitely be in for a pleasant surprise when they visit.
