Wilkommen auf München!
Welcome to Munich! Land of the Lederhosen and Amazing Beer. Probably best known for it yearly Oktoberfest Celebration (Ironically starting in September), Munich is located in the South of Germany and is the capital of Bavaria. The city has a very traditional vibe as is evident with old school German garb, authentic cuisine, and vintage architecture. Analogous to the Texas of Germany, Its every cliche you might expect from your first visit to Germany, in a good way of course. And while you are there, might as well embrace all of the German traditions to the fullest! Auf ghets!
10. Rothenburg ob der tauber
Just a few hours outside of Munich is an amazing Medieval town that’s well worth the trip. Rothenburg is surrounded by a huge fortified wall that you can explore for yourself as well. Inside the fortress is a cobblestone town with buildings and houses straight out of a fairy tale. Make sure to check out the antique shops for great souvenirs. They even have a Christmas store that is especially extravagant. Just be sure to arrive relatively early as most shops are not open very late (maybe 7pm).
9. Drive on the Autobahn
Not technically in Munich, but who doesn’t want to take a ride on the world famous roads of the Autobahn. Actually a network of roads throughout the country, its liberating to drive on a speedway with no speed limit. Plus you get to admire the beautiful country sides of Germany. The roads are indicated by a sign with a circle and three hash marks through its center. Seeing a Porsche zoom by at 200 mph is still pretty cool.
8. Olympic Park
Check out the Olympic stadium and scenic gardens for a relaxing afternoon. You can even go inside the stadium for a tour. Check out their hours and events here. There’s also tons of snack food and carnival games to occupy yourself with. Speaking of food…
7. Traditional German Food
If you wanted to try authentic German cuisine, then this is one of the best places to do it. You can get delicious Käsespätzle (Egg noodles shaped into tiny spheres sauteed in butter and cheese), Schnitzel, and more Bratwurst and Pretzels than you can imagine. A word of caution, before you tackle these hearty meals, they are super filling. Try as much as the traditional food as you can while your in Southern Germany, since I found it difficult to find the same meals while i was in Berlin, the capital.
6. Drink German Bier
Its no secret Germans are proud of their bier(beer). And it is some of the tastiest you’ll find in the World. Thanks to their German Bier purity laws, all bier is made with simple ingredients that they have been perfecting for decades. Head to a Bier Garten, grab einmas (one liter cup) and Prost(cheers) to your friends! Make sure to keep eye contact or else…
5. Oktober Fest
Germany’s biggest and most famous annual festival, which takes place mid September to Early October, is also held in Munich. Tons of traditional tents are put up around the city and are filled with beir, singing, and good times. Get ready for insane crowds and lots of waiting to get in though. You must reserve a tent far in advance if you hope to get in.
4. Hofbräuhaus
The most famous bier hall in Munich, Hofbräuhaus has an authentic 16th century vibe, with live folk music, delicious German dishes, and waiters/waitresses in traditional German grab, Lederhose und Dirndl.
3. Go to the Englischer Garten
Also known as the English Garden, its a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Check out some of the cool gardens, and if you’re brave enough, take a swim in the Eisbach. Its a river that runs right through the park with freezing temperature. There is also a section with continuous waves where you can watch surfers riding.
2. BMW World
Even if you’re not into cars (but especilaly if you are) the world famous BMW world is definitely worth seeing. There are tons of exotic and futuristic vehicles on display all through out the museum. BMW world and the BMW Museum are located right across from each other, but are separate attractions. BMW world is a free exhibit while the museum which offers more vintage models is about 10 Euros. find out more info here.
1. Marienplatz
Quite possibly the most impressive structure in Munich, Marienplatz is the central square and holds a centuries old Gothic style church of immense proportions. Hours can be spent admiring its imposing design. You can also watch the Glockenspiel, which is a mechanical figure reenactment of Munich’s fascinating past. It plays every day at 11am, noon, and 5pm. Grab a Wikbier (walking beer) and take a stroll through the square to feel the city’s unique energy and gaze at other wonderful architecture nearby.
Munich is a wonderful city immersed with tons of tradition. From the vintage architecture, to the hearty meals, and the delicious German Bier, there’s a lot to experience from your first visit. Personally I think with all the amazing cuisine, history, and nightlife Munich is an underrated travel destination. All the people are very friendly and is relatively easy to get around without knowing any German (although it is encouraged). Even a trip planned outside of the Oktoberfest celebration can be filled with excitement and fun. I hope you guys get to visit someday soon. As always, thanks for reading and keep leveling up!
