10 Best Oahu Activities to Experience True Hawaiian Culture

Oahu has the highest population of all the Hawaiian islands with around 1 million inhabitants. Often referred to as the “Gathering Place”, Oahu is famous for its high rise hotel resorts, city life, beautiful beaches, natural scenery, and turbulent history. The island is home to the capital city of Honolulu and is the 3rd largest (after Big Island and Maui). From surfing to beachside relaxing, there’s so many activities to enjoy! Here’s the top 10 best things to do while visiting Oahu.

10. Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck in Oahu North Shore

The shining light of any trip to Hawaii is the legendary food scene. And no other island can compete with variety and quality like Oahu. A prime example of this is Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, a convenient pit stop on the way to the North Shore. Order the classic shrimp scampi for a taste of Hawaii’s casual but delicious food truck culture. While Poke Bowls remain the king of Hawaiian food, there’s so many other amazing dishes to try.

9. Dole Plantation

The Dole Plantation is one of Oahu’s most popular attractions, which include active farm lands, gardens, and the largest maze in the world. You can also sign up for a train tour aboard the Pineapple Express to gain some insight into the history of the plantation. Ironically you’ll find out that pineapples are not even native to Hawaii. Despite the whimsical facade, there’s a much darker history of Dole’s role in the island’s annexation through corporate control. But that is a story for another day…

8. Iolani Palace

This iconic palace is located in downtown Honolulu and is the only official royal palace in the United States. Built in 1882, Iolani Palace was residence to the monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom until their sovereignty was overthrown in 1893 by greedy colonizers. There’s also a statue of the late and Great King Kamehameha I who first united the Hawaiian Islands. Sign up for a tour of Iolani Palace here.

7. Byodo-In Temple

The Byodo-In Temple is a half scale replica of a 1,000 year old temple in Uji, Japan. It was built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the 1st Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The gardens, koi fish, and traditional architecture feels like you’ve been instantly transported to Japan. There’s also a 3-ton brass bell you can ring for happiness, blessings, and long life.

6. Waimea Bay

Located on Oahu’s North Shore is the infamous Waimea Bay. This crescent shaped bay is the perfect escape from the densely packed beaches of Waikiki. It is known for its cliff jumping and huge swells for some epic surfing. During the winter months the waves and tides are pretty vicious, so we only recommend jumping in for strong swimmers.

5. Toa Luau in Oahu

One of the best experiences to immerse yourself in Polynesian culture is with a Luau. And one of the most authentic ones can be found at the Toa Luau. This 3-hour celebration has cultural activities like coconut husking, lei making, a massive feast with traditional Hawaiian food, and performances like hula dancing and fire knife shows. It also grants you access to the Waimea Waterfall and botanical garden so be sure to arrive early. While it doesn’t focus specifically on just Hawaiian culture like the Old Lahaina Luau in Maui, learning about the other Polynesian ancestors who influenced the region is fascinating.

4. Waikiki Beach

Waikiki is the most iconic beach on Oahu and probably what most people envision when they think of Hawaii. While this may be the most touristy beach, there’s no denying its beauty with crystal clear waters, golden sands, and a vibrant city life just beyond its shores. Whether you’re chilling on the beach or learning to surf there’s always something goin on at Waikiki Beach. The famous Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue stands as a tribute to the father of international surfing, where many people throw their flowery leis out of respect.

3. Pearl Harbor National Monument

Pearl Harbor is one of the most significant war memorials you’ll find in America. This national monument is considered a national park and a solemn place to learn about the tragic history of that fateful day. The heavy atmosphere allows the perfect opportunity to pay respects and reflect. Keep in mind to gain access to the USS Arizona Memorial, you’ll need to register at a kiosk upon arrival. Taking the ferry to this submerged battle ship is the highlight of the experience. Sign up fora round trip transportation tour of Pearl Harbor here.

2. Diamond Head State Monument

For the best views in Oahu, head to the top of the Diamond Head State Monument. This volcanic tuff cone is 300,000 years old and offers incredible panoramic views of Oahu’s coastline and Waikiki Beach. The trail to the summit is a steep 1.6 mile roundtrip journey uphill with an elevation gain of 760ft. You can also explore secret caves and military bunkers at the top. While most people begin the hike at 6am to catch the sunrise, sunset is not a bad option either. There are limited permits for each time slot so be sure to reserve tickets at least a few weeks in advance.

1. Oahu Surfing Lessons

If you’re looking for the most epic experience to have in Hawaii then look no further than surfing! Although surfing has been around for centuries, ancient Polynesians brought it to Hawaii where it was transformed into a deeply spiritual and social activity. The Legendary Duke Paoa Kahanamoku introduced surfing to the world in the 1900s and it has been the most rad sport in the world since. We recommend signing up for a surfing lesson on Waikiki to learn from professionals and avoid the inevitable wipeout as much as possible. It’s an exhilarating sport of focus and balance, but extremely satisfying once you ride your first wave.
