Brazil’s Raucous, Oceanside Party Town
Rio de Janeiro is one of Brazil’s largest cities located right on the coast. It’s the perfect destination for nightlife seekers, beach lovers, and sightseeing enthusiasts. If this is your first time to Brazil, I would highly recommend checking out this post to prepare yourself with everything you might need. Rio is a fantastic metropolis where each activity is more exhilarating than the last. Get ready for the top 10 breathtaking sights you cannot miss on your next trip to Rio de Janeiro!
10. Escadaria Selaron
Also known as the Selaron steps, an artistic master piece created by Jorge Selaron with colorful, individually placed tiles. The vibrant stair case is located downtown between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa. The base of the staircase is the most famous spot, so be prepared to wait in line if you want a picture. Try heading further up to avoid the crowds.
9. Museu do Amanhã
The Museum of Tomorrow offers an endearing peek into the future of our civilizations around the World. Observe where humanity has been and where we are going in this futuristic museum. It’s a great escape from the craziness of Rio and you’ll gain a ton of knowledge. Find out hours and ticket prices here.
8. Jardim Botanico
Another tranquil reprieve from downtown is the illustrious Botanical Garden. Take your time and meander through hundreds of acres of the park with thousands of diverse plant species. Among waterfalls, cacti, a Japanese Garden, and giant trees, you might also spot the iconic Jesus statue in the distance.
7. Brazilian Steakhouse
Rio de Janeiro also has delicious delicacies for all the foodies out there. A night out at a Brazilian steakhouse is an epic experience for you and your taste buds. Churrascaria Palace in Copacabana is an all you can eat meat haven and one of the best restaurants in the city. Waiters endlessly serve you a variety of steak cuts until you are ready to call it quits. Definitely the most savory cuts of beef I’ve ever had in my life. It’s a bit pricey for a dinner but well worth it.
6. Ipanema and Copacabana Beaches
The beaches of Rio de Janeiro are legendary around the World. And the Seaside paradise of Ipanema does not disappoint. Relax as you take in the tropical weather, beautiful mountain scenery, and the refreshing yet powerful crashing waves. Merchants are constantly walking by selling anything from food and sunglasses, to exquisite caipirinhas. Walk down a few blocks to Copacabana, for another awesome stretch of beaches, bars, and shops. There is also a cool Fort in Copa to check out if you decide on getting cultured. Highly recommend staying in these areas.
5. Pão de Açúcar
One of the most famous heights in Rio de Janeiro is Pão de Açúcar. A gargantuan granite rock that offers some of the best views of the city. Also known as Sugarloaf Mountain, the only way to reach the summit is by a cable car hundreds of feet in the air. Watching the golden sun set over Rio is a magical experience. Bring a student ID for a hefty discount on the entrance fee.
4. Cristo Redentor
Now it’s time for the most iconic symbol of Rio de Janeiro. Ascend the peak of Mount Corcovado to get an up-close look at Christ the Redeemer. Gaze in awe as the mighty statue towers over with outstretched arms as he embraces the city. The best way up is to uber to the halfway point and ride the van to the pedestal or just sign up for a private tour with pickup. The most scenic route is riding the train up. You can also hike all the way up, but who really has time for all that.
3. Santa Marta Favela
The most memorable experiences are the ones that make the most impact. The shanty towns that comprise Favela Santa Marta display the disparity between the affluent and poverty with striking realism. A tour of the Santa Marta Favela exposes the underdeveloped conditions a majority of Brazilians must endure. Santa Marta rests on the hills that overlook Rio de Janeiro’s coastline and has amazing views. Michael Jackson shot a famous music video here, and a memorial sculpture remains overlooking the city. An eye-opening tour that I would highly recommend.
2. Hand Gliding in Rio de Janeiro
As if running off a mountain isn’t exciting enough, Rio offers breath-taking views incomparable to anything else. Take in the city from a rare perspective as you glide above lush forests and fluorescent beaches. My entire high-flying experience is here so check it out if you’re having doubts. There really is no better way to see all of Rio de Janeiro. Book your tickets to fly here!
1. Rio de Janeiro Carnival
Perhaps the quintessential Rio de Janeiro experience is Carnival. An epic party of grand proportions that engulfs the entire city. Few places can compare to the magnitude of Rio’s carnival. With massive parades, blocos (block parties), and music everywhere, it is truly an unforgettable celebration. My full guide to enjoying the raucous festival is here. Prepare yourself for the largest party in the World!
Rio de Janeiro is a fantastic city filled with beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, a festive culture, and awe-inspiring landmarks.
