What to do with 3 days in Colorado this winter

The epic mountains and natural monuments make Colorado an excellent destination during this time of year. Throw is some extremely cheaper than average flights and it’s an unbeatable bargain. I recently spent 3 days touring around various spots of interests all over the majestic Colorado. If you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or just being surrounded by nature, here’s the perfect itinerary for a 3 day trip to Colorado!

Preparing for your 3 Days in Colorado

A few things to note before traveling to Colorado. Most of the iconic landmarks are scattered across the state. Renting a car will make it easier to see all of the best sights. A majority of activities are open air excursions, so you’ll need the sunlight for maximum enjoyment. Many of the museums and indoor attractions are not open very late, so waking up early will be imperative to making the most of your day.

Most likely your journey will begin from the Denver airport. Denver is a great area to stay in since it’s centrally located to many of the sights. It’s about 30 mins to other cool cities like Boulder and Golden, around 1.5 hours from ski resorts like Breckenridge or Arapahoe Basin, and a half an hour to national parks like Rocky Mountain National Park or Garden of the Gods. With so many options, you may have to plan a second trip!

Day 1: Denver, Colorado

Denver is an excellent choice for exploring the first day in Colorado. After you get settled in from the airport, you can check out the plethora of museums and shops in downtown Denver during the day and the fabulous lights of the 16th Street Mall at night. Our first meal was the signature Slopper at Crave Real Burgers. This authentic burger perched atop a grilled cheese and slathered in green chili is quite the hearty dish, but it’s super savory (also had gluten free buns!). Next we headed into lower downtown for some sightseeing. The Mile High Tree, 16th Street Mall, Union Station, and Larimer Square were all lit up beautifully so can be enjoyed at night. You can either ride the free bus or electric scooters to get between destinations.

Day 2: Colorado Springs

Embracing majestic mountains and national parks is a must while in Colorado. We wanted to visit Rocky Mountain National Park but chose Garden of the Gods State Park in Colorado Springs instead. The day begun with a delicious signature Denver omelette. We then walked through The marvelous Garden of the Gods State Park for some breathtaking views. The magnitude of the natural landmarks really leave an impression. Be sure to spend a few hours hiking its trails. Just a short 15 minute drive away rests the Cave of the Winds, where you can explore caverns on a guided tour along with a bunch of other fun activities. With a bit more time, we could of had beautiful views from the summit of Pike’s Peak. The night ended at Ted’s Montana Grill for some of the best Bison Burgers around.

Day 3: Snowboarding

A trip to Colorado is not complete without shredding down some of the best mountains in the Country! You can choose between the grand Breckenridge or The more economical option Arapahoe Basin. Since A Basin was much closer and way less expensive, that’s the one we chose. Board, helmets, and skis can be rented from Breeze Skii rentals I-70 corridor shop on the way to the mountain from Denver. Snow pants can also be rented for a reasonable price at the rental shop in A Basin. Prepare yourself for amazing mountain skylines and excellent trails. The lifts stop operating around 4pm so be sure to get as many runs as you can before then. If you make it back in time you can try running up the stairs at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Golden. Definitely a workout but the view is great.

A 3 day trip can be a short time in a new place, especially when there’s so much to do. But for those that diligently prepare, it can be just enough time to do the best things. Colorado offers exciting skiing and the most beautiful natural landscapes around. This makes it one of my favorite winter destinations in the world. 3 days in Colorado can be just enough if used wisely.
