Most Iconic Sights in Reykjavik, Iceland’s Capital City
No trip to Iceland is complete without exploring the radiant city of Reykjavik. It is the world’s most northern capital and the safest city on Earth. A majority of the country’s citizens are also located within this region. The ambiance gives off a futuristic, clean energy vibe that’s way ahead of other places. However, this Icelandic metropolis is a relatively small city which you can see most of the sights in 2 to 3 days. It can also be a great departure point for a myriad of excursions. Here’s the top 10 best things to do while in the Reykjavik!
10. The Sun Voyager
Possibly my favorite art sculptures in the world, the Sun Voyager symbolizes the promise of undiscovered territory and a dream of hope. Gazing upon the dream boat invigorates your soul with a sense of freedom. This steel structure rests right along the coast line, overlooking the frigid waters beyond.
9. Harpa, the Reflective Reykjavik Concert Hall
A short walk from the Sun Voyager is the elegant Harpa Concert Hall and Convention Centre. It’s impossible to miss the eccentric architecture of the building, with a multi-colored glass façade. Inside you’ll find a huge auditorium where you can views operas, musical, concerts, and other special events. Find out what’s on and book your tickets here.
8. Fly Over Iceland, The Newest Ride in Reykjavik
One of Reykjavik’s newest attractions is the Fly Over Iceland experience. Similar to a Universal Studios ride, this Iceland themed simulation goes into the history of the island and takes you over the country’s magnificent landscapes. It’s a bit expensive, but does a good job of introducing Icelandic heritage through fables and technological visuals. Get your tickets online here.
7. Whales of Iceland Museum
Reykjavik is known for its plethora of museums, and this is one of the best. Whales of Iceland is the largest whale exhibition in Europe, and an excellent place to learn all about the wonderful cetaceans. The exhibit boasts a bunch of life size whale models, so you can really get a sense of how massive they are. I highly recommend taking your time inside and getting the audio guide for fascinating information. The inspirational theater towards the back is definitely worth watching.
6. Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik’s Rocket Church
Observable from most points around the city, Hallgrimskirkja is a renowned church overlooking the entire downtown. Very similar to a rocket, the church was actually inspired by basalt columns which are common in Iceland’s terrain. Hallgrimskirkja is actually one of the tallest buildings in the country. You can even go to the top and get great views of Reykjavik below too!
5. Perlan Wonders of Iceland
Perlan is the most interactive museum in Reykjavik. This multi-leveled domed edifice contains everything you need to know about Iceland’s natural wonders. My favorite exhibit is the manmade ice cave you can even get lost in. The rest of the exhibit displays volcanoes, glaciers, aquatic life, and even an observation deck. Its too far from downtown to walk, so we just took a taxi there. If you want to reserve your tickets online, check out this site.
4. Fagradalsfjall Volcano
This semi-active volcano had been previously erupting in March 2021 until September 2021. Located only 30mins from Keflavik airport, Fagradalsfjall was our first stop before heading to Reykjavik. Hiking to the summit will take about 4 hours round trip. There’s some inclines and rocks along the path but it’s not too difficult. Hiking to the crater of the volcano will take an extra 4hours roundtrip. Below is a recently cooled down lava field that you can get pretty close to. Just be careful since some areas are still active. Near the parking lot is a food cart that sells some delicious lamb soup and one of the best hot dogs in Iceland.
3. Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s Famous Hot Spring
Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most famous hot spring and probably the best geothermal spa in the world. The cloudy blue waters have high concentrations of silica and are said to be great for the skin. It is about 40mins from Reykjavik, so visiting is best reserved for either departing or arriving in Iceland. Basic entry also includes a drink and a mud mask. For spas much closer to downtown, there is the sky lagoon ( expensive upscale spa) or Sundhöllin (affordable local pool).
2. Whale Watching Cruise
Iceland is one of the best places in the world to spot these majestic mammals in their natural habitat. Departing from the Reykjavik’s Old Harbor, the tours will take you out to popular feeding grounds for greater chances of sighting. Common cetaceans you’ll encounter include minke whales, humpback whales, and porpoises. Opportunities of visibility are usually around 80-90%. However, if you fail to spot one or sea conditions are bad the tour will be rescheduled for the next day at no additional cost! It can be quite cold above deck, so be sure to dress warmly. They surface and re-submerge rather quickly so remain vigilant!
1. Northern Lights in Reykjavik
Contrary to common misconceptions, the Northern lights are actually visible from Reykjavik as well. Of course, escaping light pollution will be beneficial in hunting down the Auroras. There are many excursions departing directly from Reykjavik. These will include super jeeps, minibuses, and even Northern lights cruises! For everything you need to know about hunting down the ethereal lights on your own, check out this solo hunting guide!
