Marvelous Sightseeing in the South of France

Marseilles is the 2nd most populous city in France, and the oldest in the country. Located along the French Riviera, Marseilles embodies the essence of Southern France. This is evident by the diversity of cultures and the contrast between the city’s ruggedness and beautiful Mediterranean waters. There are plenty of museums, cathedrals, and colorful murals that add to the city’s stylish vibe. With amazing weather year-round, 3 to 4 days should be sufficient to explore most of the iconic sights. Here are our top 8 best things to do while in Marseilles!

8. MUCEM

The Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean is dedicated to comparing the cultures of the Mediterranean and European descent in an informative collection of displays. It is the largest ethnographic museum in the world, and one of the reasons why Marseilles was designated as the European capital of culture. The building’s architecture is very interesting, and is located along the city’s coastal waters. Purchase your tickets for MUCEM here.

7. Fort Saint Jean

Directly connected to MUCEM is the historic Fort Saint Jean. Admission to the fort is free, but can only be accessed through MUCEM’s rooftop. Located at the entrance of the Old Port, Fort Saint Jean offers amazing views of Marseilles. The fort was built in the 1600s by King Louis XIV and has an interesting heritage. It can get a bit crowded at certain points, but is overall pretty peaceful.

6. Château d’If

About 1.5 kilometers offshore is the legendary Château d’If. This island fortress was formerly used as a prison and is almost 500 years old! The famous author Alexandre Dumas chose the Château d’If as the setting for his classic novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. Admission to the prison is free, but you’ll have to purchase a ferry ticket which departs from the Old Port area. The vibe is similar to a more French Alcatraz in San Francisco.

5. Cathédrale La Major (Marseilles Cathedral)

Also known as Marseilles Cathedral, this iconic church is located between Le Panier and Vieux Port districts. The close proximity to other Attractions makes it a great sightseeing stop. The cathedral’s Roman-Catholic Byzantine architecture is beautifully constructed and was considered a symbol of the gateway to the east. The inside is just as magnificent and is free to enter.

4. Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde

Similar to our trips around Paris and Lyon, we found another Notre-Dame church here in Marseilles. The basilica is the most iconic monument and overlooks the city from a high vantage point. Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde is also known as Bonne Mère, and offers magnificent 360 degree views of the city and sea below. It’s open 7AM to 6PM everyday.

3. Parc National des Calanques Marseilles

On the outskirts of Marseilles, you’ll find the majestic Calanques National Park. These rugged lime stone cliffs are carved between the Mediterranean channels and offer dramatic views of the sea. If Paris is like the New York City of France, then this place feels like the French California. Experience the national park by hiking its rocky landscapes or boating through its pristine waters. It’s about 40 mins away by car or an hour 20mins by public transport( metro to bus).

2. Le Panier, the Oldest District in Marseilles

Le Panier is the oldest district in Marseilles and the most inspiring place in the city. Its narrow hilly streets are adorned with colorful murals and street art on every wall. There’s a ton of boutique shops and nice restaurants to enjoy so spend some time wandering to soak in the artistic charm.

1. Vieux Port

The most scenic area in Marseilles is Vieux Port. Also known as Old Port, this picturesque marina is filled with a plethora of yachts and surrounded by the most iconic monuments in the city including MUCEM, Fort Saint Jean, Le Panier, and Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. Here you can try delicious seafood and enjoy drinks at waterfront cafes. The ferry to Chateau d’If also departs from the harbor. Vieux Port is considered the heart of the city and is a must on any trip to Marseilles!
