Located on the edge of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the weather is near perfect year-round so you can choose between a relaxing resort vacation or an exhilarating cultural adventure. Here are the top 10 must-do activities for an unforgettable trip to Cancun.

1. Marvel at Chichen Itza, One of the 7 World Wonders

About 3 hours west of the city lies one of the most well preserved archaeological ruins in the world; Chichen Itza. This ancient Mayan citadel houses the prestigious Temple of Kukulcan, which is renowned as one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Chichen Itza is a true marvel of ancient engineering with intricate designs, geometrical architecture, and complex observatories that aided Mayan astronomers in tracking stars and planets. The best way to enjoy this magnificent wonder is to sign up for a day tour leaving from Cancun. Stay tuned for a more in-depth look into our experience of the world wonder coming soon. If you only do one thing in the Cancun, make sure not to miss this amazing cultural site.

2. Swim in the Mystical Cenotes

Few natural phenomenon are as magical as the gleaming waters of a cenote. These underground sink holes are scattered all throughout the peninsula and is one of the most unique fresh water places I’ve ever swam. The crystalline waters emerging from the subterranean network of caves make for the best way to beat the heat after a tour of Chichen Itza. The limestone formations generate an aura of serenity as you dive into the azure waters below. Below are pictures from the beautiful Cenote Saamal.

3. Scuba dive in MUSA, an Ethereal Underwater Museum

Nestled amidst the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea lies a majestic gem of human artistry and natural allure, MUSA. This one of a kind underwater museum rests right off the coast of Cancun, in the heart of a natural coral reef park and boasts a mesmerizing collection of over 500 sculptures. Add to this enchanting excursion with a SCUBA diving tour, which includes a certified instructor teaching you the basic theories of SCUBA diving, preliminary pool lessons, quality equipment, and 2 tank dives to both MUSA and the Manchones Reef. This was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had, and allowed for an in-depth immersion of Cancun’s diverse marine ecosystem in a subaquatic wonderland. No certification required!

4. Soak up the sun on the Beautiful Beaches of Cancun

The pearl white sands and turquoise waters of Cancun’s beaches are the stuff of dreams. La Zona Hotelera is a resort vacation utopia created with the luxury of tourists in mind. Aside from being one of the best areas to stay, the 14mile narrow strip of beachfront hotels contain the best beaches in the city. These include the infamous Playa Delfines, the rambunctious Playa Forum, the family friendly Playa Tortuga, and the relaxing Playa Chac Mool. We stayed at Beachscape Kin Ha Villas & Suites, which had exclusive access to the secluded and marvelous Playa Ancha, as well as one of the best restaurants we ate at during our trip.

5. Coco Bongo, the Embodiment of Cancun Nightlife

This flamboyant entertainment spectacle blurs the lines between reality and fantasy with a mesmerizing swirl of lights, music, and acrobatics. Coco Bongo is the quintessential Cancun party experience that made the town a legendary nightlife destination. It’s a place where you can dance and drink till dawn, surrounded by a high-energy crowd that’s ready to let loose and have the time of their lives. Although the show can be cheesy at times, the talented gymnasts, nostalgic music, and humorous performances are guaranteed for a great night out. While the tickets can be a bit expensive ($96), it includes the cover and all you can drink for the entire night.

6. Wander the Enchanting Colonial City of Valladolid

This charming city, nestled in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, is a true gem of Mexico’s architectural and cultural heritage. As one strolls through the cobblestone streets of Valladolid, they cannot help but marvel at the stunning colonial architecture that surrounds them. From the imposing Catedral de San Gervasio to the quaint pastel-colored houses that line the streets, every building seems to have a story to tell. The entire city evokes a familiar European vibe. Valladolid is an excellent day trip for those who want to immerse themselves in the less touristy Mexican culture. This was only a short stop on our Chichen Itza tour, but I’m looking forward to spending more time in the magic of this delightful city.

7. Experience a Traditional Gondola Ride Through the Canals of Xoximilco

Xoximilco is the Venice of Cancun and makes for a perfect getaway to a more traditional party vibe. Take a ride on a traditional gondola (called a trajinera) through the winding canals surrounded by a festive atmosphere filled with Mariachi music, the aroma of authentic Mexican cuisine, and lots and lots of tequila. Xoximilco is more than just an insane boat part; It is a living, breathing tribute to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage. Each trajinera is adorned with stunning floral arrangements, each dish prepared with traditional recipes passed down through generations, and each song sung with the passion and soul of the Mexican people. Every ticket includes a hotel pickup, a delicious meal, and all you can drink for the duration of the night.

8. Voyage to Isla Mujeres on a Catamaran Ride

For another amazing excursion off the coast of Cancun, voyage to the idyllic island of Isla Mujeres! Depart on a catamaran cruise over the brilliant hues of the majestic sea as you enjoy an open bar and great music. Upon arriving on the island, you’ll have time to explore the charming town and kick back on one of the best beaches in the world; Playa Norte! There are even options to snorkel in a marine park where you can spot exotic fish and colorful coral reefs.

Head to Downtown Cancun and you’ll find a bustling emporium of gastronomic delights and artisanal treasures, known as Mercado 28. This bustling bazaar, replete with a kaleidoscope of colors and aromas, is a veritable feast for the senses. As you traverse the labyrinthine corridors, you’ll be enveloped by a symphony of sounds, from the boisterous banter of merchants to the melodious strains of live music. The marketplace boasts a vast array of culinary delights, from savory street food to sweet confections. El Cejas Restaurante y Cocteleria is a great place to find some of the best seafood in the city.

10. Stroll Along Avenida Kukulcan, the Epicenter of the Hotel Zone

Stretching like a shimmering serpent along the gleaming shores of Cancun’s Caribbean coastline, Avenida Kukulcan is the focal point for the city’s nightlife. Here you’ll find all the major clubs, bars, and restaurants raging into the late hours of night. However, the nightclub sector is lined with hustlers so proceed with caution, lest you find yourself swept away by the current of decadence and excess that flows along this magnificent strip.
