Glorious Sightseeing in Santorini, the Gem of the Aegean Sea

Colloquially known as Thera, Santorini is the most famous island in Greece and renowned for its mesmerizing sunsets, stunning blue-domed churches, and captivating cliffside villages. The island is comprised of a chain of volcanic islands about 120 miles (200 km) south of the mainland and is considered a dream destination for travelers seeking beauty, romance, and adventure. Santorini is an elegant island where luxurious vacationers and thrill seekers alike can find exactly what they’re looking for. Join us as we unveil the top 10 best things to do in Santorini, ensuring an unforgettable experience on this enchanting island.

10. Explore the Villages of Santorini

Santorini is renowned for some of the most picturesque villages on the planet. The two largest towns are Oia (luxurious villas and sunsets) and Fira (the capital filled with blue domed churches) which hold a majority of the island’s highlights. However, there are many more towns across the island to discover like Pygros, Imerovigli, and Megalochori, each with a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and traditional Cycladic architecture. The KTEL bus system travels across the island but renting a car is a more efficient way of getting around. Those ready for a challenging exercise can hike along the caldera in the classic pilgrimage from Fira to Oia. The trek takes about 2.5 – 3 hrs but is an incredible way to Basque in the essence of this volcanic landscape. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes!

9. Skaros Rock

In the small cliffside village of Imerovigli rests the impressive Skaros Rock. This flat-topped rock formation offers unparalleled views and stands atop the ruins of a fortified castle. Many note it as a halfway point on the hike between Fira and Oia. Imerovigli is Known as the “Balcony to the Aegean” and you can stroll the serene cliffside retreat that offers breathtaking views and luxurious accommodations. The restaurant Avocado is a 10 minute walk and offers amazing Greek food.

8. Ancient Thera

These ruins of an ancient city lie upon a huge hill and date back to the 15th century, when the Greek Minoan civilization inhabited the island. Over 3,000 years ago, the great island plateau had a violent eruption with a force equivalent to 40 atomic bombs killing all of the islands inhabitants and forever changing the topography into current day Santorini. You can visit the ruins to this ancient site for only 4 Euros but it’s only open from 8am to 3pm. This historical landmark can be reached via the bus from Kamari or by car. It is also possible to hike up a rocky path from Perissa Beach in about 45mins to 1 hour.

7. The Red Beach

On the southern tip of the island, you can escape to the captivating Red Beach, where towering red cliffs dramatically meet the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. Spend a day lounging on the unique red volcanic sand, go for a refreshing swim, and revel in a place of unparalleled natural beauty. The path down to the beach is very rocky, but not difficult as long as you have sneakers. The water taxis nearby can take you to the White Beach, another secluded beach with jagged cliffs and black pebbly shores.

6. Lost Atlantis Experience Museum

The Lost Atlantis Experience is an innovated museum and 9D movie dedicated to the ancient mythological city of Atlantis. The interactive exhibits are a fun and engaging way to learn all about the lost city, which some say might have actually existed right here in Santorini. This is one of the best museums we visited in Greece and totally worth it for the imaginative wonders you’ll witness. The operating hours are from 10am to 7pm and you can purchase your tickets online here.

5. Relax on the Black Sand Beaches of Santorini

Most of Santorini’s beaches are rocky volcanic coastlines encompassed with pebbles and tiny stones. While not as famous as the Mykonos beaches, the prominent black sand beaches on the west side of the island are Santorini’s best. These include Perissa and Kamari beach which both contain rows of sunbeds to relax on. The adjacent streets are lined with restaurants, beach bars, and water sports facilities. It makes the perfect atmosphere to lounge in the sun or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Thera. After the sun sets, check out the open air movies theater of Cine Kamari. It plays various films and of course Mama Mia, every night staring at 9:30pm.

4. Akrotiri Ruins

Embark on a journey back in time as you explore the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. Preserved remarkably well after a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, this archaeological site showcases a Minoan Bronze Age settlement. Wander through its well-preserved streets, admire the frescoes, and unravel the mysteries of this lost civilization. The entry price was around $10 Euros and is open from 8am to 8pm. It has very similar vibes to the ruins in Pompeii. The Red Beach is only an easy 10min walk from the site.

3. Indulge in the Eccentric Santorini Wineries

Santorini’s volcanic soil produces exceptional wines, and wine lovers will delight in exploring the island’s vineyards and wineries. Take a tour and taste the distinct flavors of Assyrtiko, Athiri, and Aidani grapes that create wines with varying acidity. Learn about the traditional winemaking techniques and enjoy the breathtaking vineyard views. Our favorite was Santo Wines, which has breathtaking views of the caldera and a delicious cheese and wine variety. We’re on vacation, so it’s acceptable to start drinking at 10am.

2. Watch the Sun Set from Oia

No trip to Santorini is complete without the obligatory sun set views from the village of Oia. Pronounced (ee-yah), this is the enchanting Greek village everyone imagines when they see the white washed cliffside dwellings. It may be super overcrowded with tourists, but the views are actually worth experiencing at least once. The sky ablaze with hues of gold as the sun dips below the horizon is a truly magical experience. It’s one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset despite troubles finding a good spot. To skip the crowds, show up at sun rise to have the entire town to yourself with equally amazing views.

1. Hike a Volcano and Swim in a Volcanic Hot Spring

The best way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Santorini is by sailing across the azure seas into the heart of an active volcano. We hiked to the summit of Nea Kameni and had incredible views of the surrounding archipelago created by the catastrophic eruptions thousands of years ago. These volcanic formations stand as a testament to the tumultuous past of Thera and how it became one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Entrance to the peak is only $5 Euros and the 30min hike is relatively easy.

Afterwards, we headed to the neighboring island of Palea Kameni where you can actually swim in the natural hot springs! The thermally heated sulfuric waters are warm but refreshing after the hike. Keep in mind you’ll have to jump off the ship, plunge into the waters beneath, and swim till you reach the heated shallows. The last stop was the island of Thirassia which had really cool souvenir shops and delicious seafood restaurants. The tour was an incredible way to adventure through the gorgeous landscapes of Santorini.

Santorini is an enchanting destination that captures the heart and soul of every traveler. From its awe-inspiring sunsets to its captivating villages, volcanic beaches, and world-class cuisine, this Greek island offers an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural exploration, Santorini has something for everyone.
