Exploring the Must-see Sights of Madrid

Madrid is the country’s regal capital, located in the heart of Spain. The city is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, world-class collections of art, and traditional architecture. Parks and gardens can be found throughout the city which gives it a much more tranquil ambiance than Barcelona or Valencia. Most major attractions are in close proximity, so 2 or 3 days in the city is enough (unless you really love museums). Fortunately, Madrid is very affordable and easily navigable by subway or walking. Here are the top 10 best things to see while in La villa del Oso y el Madroño!

10. Shop Your Heart out on Calle Gran Vía

Shopping on Gran Vía is the best way to satiate the shopaholic soul. This illustrious boulevard is lined with upscale department stores and the most famous fashion boutiques in Madrid. However, you can also find great souvenirs here too! The main plaza reminds me of Times Square in New York City. Check out some sky high views from Circulo de Bellas Artes to admire the vibrant city below. If you’re looking for one of the coolest bars in the city, check out Discoteca Calle 365 Callejón Secreto.

9.Admire the Elegance of Madrid at Palacio de Cibeles

Formerly known as the Telecommunications Palace, Palacio de Cibeles is an elegant edifice located in the historical center of Madrid. It’s free to enter and gaze upon the gallery of public culture in Centrocentro. For stunning views, head to the rooftop bar Terraza Cibeles on the 6th floor.

8. Templo de Debod, a Piece of Egypt in Madrid

Transport yourself to ancient Egypt with a 2,200 year old Egyptian temple in Spain located in the heart of the city. Templo de Debod is an archaeological jewel that was dismantled and rebuilt in Madrid in an international campaign to save the monuments of Nubia. The temple is an impressive monolith of the ancient past and offers a spectacular spot to watch the sunset.

7. Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s Historic Square

Plaza Mayor is the most historic square in Madrid and an excellent spot for people-watching and soaking in the local atmosphere. The iconic plaza is surrounded by cafes and restaurants where the vestiges of the old market used to stand. Be sure to try one of the signature foods of Madrid, bocadillo de calamares (squid sandwich), at Bar La Ideal or a chocolate dipped churro from the famous Chocolatería San Ginés.

6. Prado Museum, The Best Art Museum in Madrid

El Museo del Prado is a revered sanctum with the best European art collection in Madrid. The rich tapestry of artistic masterpieces include the works of Goya, Velázquez, and El Greco. The legendary “las Meninas” painting can also be found here. The Prado along with the other notable museums of Sofia Reina and Thyssen Bornemisza, comprise a collection of art galleries known as the “Paseo del Arte”. No photos can be taken inside unfortunately, but its easy to spend hours here admiring the art pieces.

5.Stroll Thru the Verdant Gardens at El Retiro Park

El Retiro Park offers serenity in a lush oasis of manicured gardens right in the midst of the city. Originally intended to be the royal family’s retirement garden, it is now free to the public. Renting a rowboat on the lake makes for a great way to spend a sunny afternoon (They might close it if it’s too windy though).

4. Watch the Traditional Spanish Dance at a Flamenco Show

Attend a Flamenco Show to submerge yourself in the passion and drama of Flamenco, an embodiment of Spanish eminance. Witness the fiery dance, soulful melodies, and the heart-rending emotion that defines this traditional art form. The show at Torres Bermeja lasted about an hour but included various option packages like wine or tapas. The small venue offers an intimate experience close to the stage where the intensity of the dancer’s passion could be felt in your own soul.

3. Indulge in a Spanish Cuisine Market at Mercado de San Miguel Madrid

For a true taste of Madrid, head to Mercado de San Miguel, a gourmet paradise showcasing the best of Spanish cuisine. Sample delectable tapas, fresh seafood, and a variety of local wines in this diverse food market. The lively atmosphere and diverse flavors make San Miguel a culinary haven. It can be a bit pricey, but the quality here is some of the best in Madrid. Sign up for a wine & tapas tour to fully immerse yourself in the country’s gastronomy.

2. Take a Day Trip to Toledo

Just a short journey from Madrid lies the medieval marvel of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Toledo is an ancient hilltop town known as the city of the 3 cultures from its Muslim, Christian, and Jewish influences. The fortified village boasts a diverse array of sacred churches, mosques, and synagogues. This full day tour from Madrid offers great insight into Spain’s turbulent past from the brief periods of Roman and Arabic control. The Roman Catholic church of Catedral Primada contains some of the most ornate decorations I’ve ever seen in a Cathedral (after the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Cathedral).

1. Awe in Royal Extravagance at Palacio Real

Palacio Real is the Residence to the royal family of Spain, and is considered the largest in Europe. This opulent palace of Madrid boasts grandiose chambers, ornate architecture, and meticulously landscaped gardens on par with Versailles in Paris, France. The changing of the guard ceremony is a spectacle akin to a refined choreography that occurs every Wednesday and Saturday from 11am to 2pm. Sign up for a Royal Palace tour for an amazing guided experience thru Spain’s scandalous history. There’s no better way to understand the country’s political influence!
