Everything You Need to Know for a Spectacular Vacation to Spain

Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula and is considered the largest country in Southern Europe. España( in Spanish) is renowned for its incredible history, delectable food, fascinating architecture, and stunning beaches. After Ireland, Spain is home to some of the friendliest people on the planet. Their late mornings and even later nights grant the Spanish a laidback attitude that is very charismatic. Here are the best tips to prepare yourself for the perfect trip to Spain!

Best Time to Visit Spain

Understanding Spain’s climate is key to planning a successful trip. The country experiences various climates, from Mediterranean in the coastal regions to mountainous in the central areas. Summers (June to August) are typically hot, making coastal areas ideal, while winters (December to February) are milder, perfect for exploring cities and historical sites. Here is a list of the best festivals to plan your vacation around:

  • La Tomatina – Located in Buñol every last Wednesday in August, it is considered the world’s largest tomato fight that leaves behind a sea of red in the streets.
  • Running of the Bulls – This adrenaline-pumping experience takes place at the beginning of July in Pamploma. Only for those who are brave enough (or crazy enough) to sprint away from a herd of raging bulls.
  • Las Fallas – Held every March in Valencia, Las Fallas is a festival that starts with elaborate wooden sculptures displayed throughout the city and ends in a spectacular burning of said sculptures.
  • Semana Santa – Observed across Spain during the week leading up to Easter, the “Holy Week” features religious processions, ornate floats, and traditional attire with the most elaborate celebrations held in Seville, Malaga, and Valladolid.
  • Feria de Abril – Celebrated in Seville, this week-long celebration typically held in April includes traditional music, flamenco dancing, colorful parades, and a lively fair.
  • San Isidro Festival – Dedicated to the patron saint of Madrid, the festivities include traditional music, dance, bullfights, exhibitions, and various cultural events.

Essential Items to Bring to Spain

  • Passport – To enter the country and possibly neighboring countries.
  • Power Outlet Adaptors – Standard European outlets operate on a 230V supply voltage, so bring a type C or F to charge your devices.
  • Water Bottle – Fill up your own bottle for free from the plethora of underground spring fountains across the cities.
  • Comfortable Shoes – There are many iconic landmarks scattered across the country so be sure to bring great walking shoes.
  • Swimming Clothes – In summer you can take a dip in some of the most beautiful beaches like Barceloneta in Barcelona, Platja d’en Bossa in Ibiza, or Malvarrosa in Valencia.
  • Sunscreen – Summers can get brutally hot and there’s little shade between monuments.

Best Cities to Visit in Spain

Spain has an array of incredible cities scattered throughout the country in various regions. Each city has its own unique vibe, so it’s worth exploring different regions. Here are some of the most iconic places to consider visiting:

  • Barcelona – The capital of Catalonia and one of the largest cities in the country, Barcelona contains marvelous modernistic architecture, incredible beaches, and is a bustling city where something is always going on. Check out the Go City passes for up to 50% off on Barcelona’s top attractions!
  • Madrid – The Capital city has a vast history, royal palaces, and some of the greatest art museums on the planet.
  • Valencia – This coastal metropolis is a mix between modern and traditional with the City of Art and Sciences contrasting against the cathedrals in Old Town. Valencia also has huge beaches and is considered the birthplace of paella.
  • Toledo – Considered a world heritage site, Toledo portrays Spain’s ancient past in a charming medieval village perched on a hilltop fortress.
  • Ibiza – Renowned as a nightlife haven where you can party till dawn, Ibiza also has mesmerizingly clear beaches and the scenic old town named Dalt Vila. The club scene is a true competitor to Mykonos.
  • Seville – The capital of Andalusia located in southern Spain is synonymous with flamenco, bullfighting, and architectural beauty.
  • Granada – Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Granada displays its cultural heritage through its narrow labyrinthine streets and amazing views.

Transportation in Spain

Spain has an enormous amount of transportation options from the intercity high speed rails, to the buses, metros, trams, and taxis buzzing around each city. Uber is also available in big cities like Madrid or Valencia, but unavailable in smaller places like Ibiza. It’s also more efficient to just hail a taxi in Barcelona. Some cities even offer special multi-day subway passes on discount. Taking a flight between the different regions is also an affordable way to travel (about $50 for one-way flights).

Operating Hours

The whole sleepy time siesta thing isn’t actually a common practice in Spain…for the most part. Big cities have grown accustomed to skipping the nap but operating hours for business are sometimes a bit strange. Many restaurants or shops will open from late morning until mid afternoon and reopen again during the late evening until often past midnight! If you arrive in Spain during the summer, expect for some businesses or attractions to be closed for the owner’s own vacation. It’s always best to verify operating hours before heading to your destination.

Food in Spain

Food is a huge part of Spain’s culture and the cuisine you’ll find across the country does not disappoint. Of course there is always the ubiquitous paella as the nation’s main dish, but where Spanish gastronomy really shines is the art of tapas. Order an assortment of smaller plates to expand your culinary horizon with delicious ham, savory seafood, and other heavenly appetizers. Stay tuned for our Spain food vlog for more details on the divine delicacies across the country. Drinks like sangria, cava, and wine are also exceptional.

Money

As a member of the European Union, Spain’s main currency is the Euro. It’s always wise to carry a small amount of cash with you, but a majority of transactions can be processed with credit. Almost everywhere from taxis to small vendors accepted credit cards so we barley used any cash. Of course you’ll want some change for the buses and other small purchases just in case. Withdrawing from an ATM in town is always better than exchange rates at the airport. Overall Spain isn’t that expensive (excluding Ibiza).

Languages in Spain

You might be surprised to learn that Spain has 5 official languages! These include Castilian Spanish, Catalan, Galician, Basque, and Aranese. Spanish is spoken by nearly everyone so knowing at least that is enough to get by. Barcelona is in the Catalan region so you might notice a slight difference in culture, food, and spelling. They also speak Valencian in Valencia, which is much closer to Catalan than Spanish. Even with only English it is possible to get by in the big cities and touristy spots. But it always helps to know a few phrases to impress the locals!

Spanish Phrases:

  • Buenas – a greeting you can use anytime of day
  • Muchas Gracias – Thank you very much
  • me puedo pagar con targeta? – Can I pay with credit card?
  • Donde estan los servicios? – Where are the bathrooms?
  • La cuenta por favor – The check please
  • perdon/ disculpe – excuse me
  • usted hablan ingles? – Do you speak english?
  • Nos vemos – See you
  • Puedes darme… – can you give me ….
  • de nada – You’re welcome

Spain is an incredible country filled with delicious food, astounding architecture, beautiful beaches, and thrilling festivals. The drastically different cultures from region to region means even a month-long vacation to Spain won’t be enough to see it all. It is easily one of the best countries in Europe and I highly recommend planning a trip. Stay tuned to more adventures through Spain coming soon! Thanks for reading and keep leveling up!
