Must Know Tips for Your 1st Time in Dubai, UAE

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of 7 Emirate states located on the tip of the Arabian Peninsula in the heart of the Middle East. The capital city of Abu Dabi boasts lots of cultural landmarks like the world’s largest mosque and the Ferrari World theme park, while the notorious Dubai is an extravagant futuristic coastal city. The UAE is governed by an elective monarchy and while still more liberal than most Middle Eastern countries, has its own set of strict rules to follow. This post will focus on traveling to Dubai since we spent most of our time there. Here’s everything you need to know before planning your trip to the Emirates.

A Glimpse into the Past & Present of Dubai, UAE

Dubai hasn’t always been a prospering oasis of opulence. The transformation from a modest fishing village to one of the world’s most futuristic cities was thanks to the discovery of oil in the 1960s. The rapid development has led to a city that breaks over 300 world records from the tallest building to the deepest swimming pool. Dubai’s ambition and vision have turned it into a global hub for business, luxury, and tourism.

While it can be expensive, the wide variety of attractions guarantee anyone will find something they enjoy here. From eccentric theme parks to glistening beaches, the amount of interesting activities will rival a day at Disneyland. Despite its modernity, a few vestiges of traditional heritage and Bedouin past remain near the Old Dubai areas of Al Fahidi and the spice souks. Only about 11% of the population is natural born Emirate, making it one of the most diverse cities on the planet. The main language is Arabic, but English is used by almost everyone across the city.

Where to Stay in Dubai

When it comes to accommodations, Dubai is the epitome of luxury, offering everything from opulent resorts to chic boutique hotels. From underwater rooms to the world’s only 7 star hotel, the sky is literally the limit for those trying to taste a slice of that bourgeoisie lifestyle. Fortunately, there are still many affordable high quality hotels to choose from. We stayed at a 4 star hotel downtown with great amenities like a roof top pool, spa, multiple restaurants, and a bar for around $70 a night! The final day of our trip was at a fancy 5 star resort on the Palm Island, which included direct access to the beach, the most amazing room I’ve ever stayed in, and a night club for $250 a night. 100x better deal than you’ll find in cities like New York. Here’s a few areas to consider depending on particular interests:

  • Downtown Dubai – Centrally located to many famous attractions like the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, but can be a bit more expensive
  • The Marina – A great area where you can easily walk around many restaurants, shops, and also visit the beach
  • The Palm Jumeirah – With direct access to the beach, these man-made islands boast high end resorts and water parks for those who lack any financial concerns
  • Old Dubai – More traditional areas like Al Fahidi/Bastakiya offer the cheapest prices available for those looking for authentic Emirate culture

Transportation Around Dubai

Dubai might be one of the least walkable cities, with long stretches of highways & a lack of side walks between landmarks. Public transportation’s only saving grace is the Dubai Metro, which is very cheap, fast, clean, and efficient (almost rivaling Japan’s subway systems). The sprawling city is huge, meaning most commutes between popular destinations will take a good amount of time. The fastest way to get around is by car with any of the plentiful taxis or ride-apps. Keep in mind the traffic gets pretty bad around rush hour though. While Uber is available to use, the Careem app is much more versatile and typically offers much lower prices.

The Vibe of Dubai

Dubai is an amalgamation of various cities with similarities between Las Vegas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. My first impression of the city is an adult Disneyland where everyone is trying to upsell more premium options for everything. At first glance it is ultra modern and futuristic but the artificial atmosphere seems mostly catered to squeeze every penny out of tourists. There are many fun experiences to have but the city always feels so extra, mainly going over the top with everything just because they can. People on a budget might struggle to do it all but anyone looking to “ball out” will definitely find what they’re looking for. Amidst all the cutting-edge architecture, any remnants of authentic culture or history can only be found in confined locations. But if you’re here to party on a lavish vacation, it will be a good time.

When is the Best Time to Visit the UAE?

The best time to visit the UAE is from November to March, when the weather is pleasantly mild and ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Temperatures range between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), offering a welcome escape from the scorching summer heat. Many attractions will close during the summer months, so be sure to check operating hours beforehand. We visited in late May and temperatures regularly went over 100°F. The heat is intense, which is why many indoor activities are open very late and few people are out during the daytime.

Money in the UAE

The main currency in the United Arab Emirates is the UAE Dirham (AED). As of the time of this writing, $1 USD is about $3.66 AED. I wouldn’t worry about exchanging money since almost all transactions are with credit cards and we never used cash. Dubai can be an extremely expensive city so prepare your wallet.

Rules to Follow in the UAE

It’s no secret The UAE is a bit more on the conservative side so there are a few strict rules to follow when visiting Dubai. Every first time visitor should be aware of them just to stay out of trouble. We didn’t encounter any issues so I have no idea how strictly the laws are enforced. However, fines or legal consequences can occur so just remain respectful of the culture and there should be no problem.

  • Dress moderately – While Dubai is more liberal compared to other cities in the UAE, it’s still important to dress conservatively in public places, especially in malls, markets, and religious sites. Women should avoid wearing revealing clothing, and men should avoid going shirtless outside of beach areas. Swimwear is only appropriate at pools, beaches, and water parks.
  • No Public Displays of Affection – Public displays of affection (PDA) such as kissing, hugging, or holding hands (for non-married couples) are not allowed in public spaces.
  • Alcohol consumption – Alcohol is only available in licensed venues, such as hotels, bars, and clubs. Drinking in public or being intoxicated in public places is illegal and can result in serious penalties. There is also a disturbing lack of liquor stores.
  • Respecting Religion – Islam is the official religion of Dubai, and it’s important to respect religious practices. During the holy month of Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect for those fasting. Visitors should also refrain from playing loud music or dancing in public during this period.
  • Be Mindful of Photography – While Dubai is photogenic, be cautious when taking pictures of government buildings, airports, military installations, and locals (especially women) without their permission. Trust me, save your videos for after you’ve left the airport or they’ll search you bags again.
  • Illegal substances – Dubai has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs, and possession, use, or trafficking of illegal substances can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment. Even trace amounts of drugs can result in serious consequences, so it’s important to ensure you aren’t carrying anything illegal.
  • No Swearing or Offensive Gestures – Using foul language, making rude gestures, or engaging in aggressive behavior is illegal and can lead to fines or imprisonment. Always stay polite and respectful in public settings.
  • Same-Sex Relationships – Same-sex relationships are not recognized in Dubai, and any public display of affection between same-sex couples is illegal. Travelers should exercise caution and discretion.
  • Stay Away from Political Discussions – Avoid making political comments or engaging in political discussions, especially in public forums or social media. Criticizing the UAE government or its leaders is considered a serious offense.
  • Respect Local Laws and Authority – Dubai’s laws can be stricter than in other countries. Always respect the local laws and follow the guidance of authorities. Penalties for violations can include fines, imprisonment, or deportation.
