Top 10 Best Things to do in the Magnificent Mexico City
Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the most populous city in North America. The magic of La Ciudad de Mexico is expressed through its tumultuous history, delicious food, and incredible monuments. The city is a harmonious blend of ancient, colonial, and modern architecture. Whether you crave artistry, adventure, or an excuse to indulge in tacos at every turn, CDMX delivers. Here are the top 10 best experiences to have while visiting Mexico City!

10. Stand Before El Ángel de la Independencia
Towering Proudly over the long Paseo de la Reforma avenue, El Ángel de la Independencia is a symbol of Mexico’s resilience and freedom. Also referred to as El Ángel, this iconic monument is more than just an elegant monolith. This golden-winged victory statue (similar to the one in Berlin), is also a tomb dedicated to 14 war heroes. The climb to the top is free but you’ll have to brave over 200 steps up and reserve tickets at the Alcaldía Cuauhtémoc Cultural & tourism office. El Monumento a la Revolucion is another cool landmark nearby you can also head to the top of!

9. Wander El Zocalo & the Historic Center
To understand the true essence of Mexico City, one must spend some time wandering El Zocalo in El Centro Historico. This massive open air square (also known as Plaza de la Constitución) is in the heart of the city, with many famous landmarks in close proximity. Right in front of the main square is the Metropolitan Cathedral, to the side you’ll find Palacio Nacional, and nearby the infamous Templo Mayor & Museum, the actual ancient Aztec ruins the city is built on top of. Just a few blocks down you’ll find El Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico, which has one of the most opulent hotel designs I’ve ever seen.
8. Escape to Chapultepec Forest
Chapultepec Forest is like the Mexican Central Park, except twice the size. Amidst the sprawling greenery, you’ll find Chapultepec Castle, the only castle in North America that was actually home to royalty. Wander through its opulent halls, gaze upon sweeping city views, and soak in the fairytale ambiance that makes it one of the city’s most enchanting spots. Be sure to book tickets and allocate enough time to explore it all, the area is massive.

7. Views from Torre Latinoamerica
Head to the top of Torre Latinoamericana for some of the best views of the city. This 44-story tower offers an observation deck with an unparalleled skyline stretching to the mountains. It’s one of the tallest skyscrapers in Latin America and tickets are relatively cheap so it’s worth the trip.

6. Marvel at El Palacio de Bellas Artes
If one building is emblematic of Mexico City’s blend between old and new it has to be El Palacio de Bellas Artes. The architecture gives off European vibes and its golden dome gleams against the skyline. Step inside to admire the art Deco fusion of murals and paintings by famous artists like Diego Rivera. To be honest, the gallery isn’t as expansive as the price would suggest but it’s worth the trip for the building alone. Right across the street is Palacio Postal, a Government post office where you can admire more fancy architecture for free.
5. Journey Through Time at El Museo Nacional de Antropología
If you visit only one museum in Mexico City, make it this one. The National Museum of Anthropology houses the country’s most treasured artifacts, including the famed Aztec Sun Stone. The same rounded stone calendar that caused all that havoc back in 2012. Each hall transports you to a different era, unraveling the layers of Mexico’s complex and fascinating past. Be prepared to spend at least 3 to 4 hours if you want to explore it all.
4. Stroll Through the Magical Town of Coyocán
For a more cultural and colonial charm, head to the borough of Coyocán. The cobble stone streets give the town a more authentic vibe than the center of Mexico City. Located about 30mins from downtown, the best way to explore Coyocán is with a guided tour that also takes you to the floating gardens of Xochimilco, UNAM, and the Aztec Stadium. This Xochimilco is a bit more touristy than the one in Cancun, with less party vibes but it’s still a cool experience. Coyocán is also home to the legendary Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul), where you can immerse yourself in the life of Mexico’s most iconic artist.
3. Get Rowdy at a Lucha Libre Match
I’ll admit I wasn’t impressed with pro wrestling before, but Lucha Libre might have changed my disposition towards it. Lucha is Mexico’s gift to the world of entertainment and something that should not be missed while in Mexico City. The Lachadors are essentially god-like super hero figures to the locals, and the energy inside the stadium is insane. We signed up for an epic Lucha & Taco tour where we learned all about the history of this eccentric sport and had some of the best tacos of my life at Tizne. After a few group chants and a couple of Micheladas you too can embody the soul of a Mexican warrior.

2. Celebrate the Día de los Muertos Festival in Mexico City
Día de los Muertos is the country’s most popular festival, celebrated by millions across the world. Ironically, Day of the Dead is a festival more about life than death. Occurring each November, the city transforms into an explosion of color, marigolds, and elaborately painted skulls. This sacred tradition is a spiritual event for families but has recently grown into a city wide phenomenon. Stay tuned for our Día de los Muertos guide where we’ll go over our entire experience and share the top tips for visiting yourself!

1. Ride a Hot Air Balloon Over Teotihuacán
To gain a profound sense of euphoria and a new perspective on Mexico, catch a ride on a hot air balloon of the Pyramids of Teotihuacan. These ancient structures were built over 700 hundred years before being discovered by the Aztecs, and mysteries and still being uncovered to this day. The only reason why Chichen Itza was chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World over this massive complex is because the temples are mostly reconstructions after its original destruction. Sign up for an immersive sunrise tour to learn all about the ancient history from an experienced guide. If there is one breathtaking experience you visit on your next trip, make sure it’s this one. for more hot air balloon madness, check out our guide to the world’s largest balloon festival.
