Essential Experiences You Must Czech out in Prague
Some people say that Prague (colloquially known as Praha) is the best city in Europe. With it’s incredible medieval architecture and insane nightlife, the claim is tough to refute. Add in Prague’s legendary beer scene and you have a city filled with fascinating history and vibrant party vibes. In Fact Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita than any where in the world! It is an extremely walkable city and 4 to 5 days should be enough to explore the highlights. Prague is also much more affordable than Western-European countries. Here’s the top 10 best things to do while visiting the City of a Hundred Spires.

10. Walk across the Charles Bridge
One of the most iconic landmarks in Prague is the Charles Bridge. Construction for the stone bridge started in 1357 and it is over 500 yeas old! Among all of the baroque statues of Catholic saints that line the bridge, one in particular stands out. Legends say that if you rub the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, your wish will be granted in 1 year and 1 day…
9. Leave a Message for the World on the John Lennon Wall
Just after crossing the Charles Bridge to Mala Strana is one of the most infamous walls outside of Berlin. The John Lennon Wall is a symbol of world peace and unity on a legalized wall of graffiti. Amidst all the colorful paintings you can find messages expressing freedom and love inspiring all to rise against political oppression. You can even leave a message of your own! Remember to bring a sharpie.

8. Indulge Yourself at the Naplavka Farmers Market
For an authentic Saturday morning culinary adventure head to the Naplavka Farmer’s Market. It is located along the river’s embankment and open from 8am to 2pm typically. The Farmer’s Market offers traditional Czeck cuisine like Palacinky, Grilovane klobasa, and more! Just a few minutes walk by you may notice the Dancing House, one of Prague’s modern architectural wonders.

7. Experience Cultural Immersion at the National Museum
Right in the heart of Wenceslas Square you’ll find the opulent National Museum. In addition to its impressive architecture, the galleries and exhibits within also contain a wide array of artifacts. The top floor observatories have incredible views of downtown Prague as well. There’s so much to see inside so be sure to allocate 2 to 3 hours to explore it all.

6. Climb to the Top of Petrin Tower
Get a taste of France right within the city of Prague with a mini Eiffel tower! Petrin tower is west of the Old Town, and can be accessed with an exhausting uphill climb. You can choose to visit the top of the tower for free or take the lift which costs around $20 USD. The views from the top are magnificent and totally worth it.

5. Visit the Fortress of Vysehrad
Vysehrad is just south of downtown and is one of the oldest historic structures in Prague. Climb up another hill to wander its quiet gardens, gothic ruins, and a vintage cathedral. There’s a ton of walking in this city so pack comfortable shoes!

4. Pilsner Urquell the Original Beer Experience
Did you know that Prague is the birthplace of beer?? Pilsner Urquell created the first pale lager in 1842 and is now a brewery and interactive museum where you can discover the history of everyone’s favorite golden beverage. This audio tour also includes a tasting of Czechia’s most beloved export including 3 free beers in your preferred style. Na zdravi!

3. Soak in The Original Beer Spa
Prague’s love of beer and saunas takes an interesting turn with the eccentric combination at the Original Beer Spa. Why not embrace the Czech’s obsession and dive in (literally) to a jacuzzi of bubbling beer? The vats of warm hops and barley are considered a wellness treatment and beneficial to the skin. You also get unlimited beer throughout the duration. Some argue it’s too touristy but I think it’s one of the most unique experiences to have in Prague.

2. Watch the Astronomical Clock Performance in Prague Old Town
Prague’s Old Town square is perhaps the most popular place in the city. Here you can find the Astronomical Clock, the oldest working clock in the world. Each hour heavy crowds gather around to watch the mechanical performance of the tiny figures. Despite being one of the most underwhelming shows in Europe, it is an obligatory part of everyone’s Prague bucket list. Sign up for a free walking tour to gain insights into the fascinating history and culture of the city! Arrive before 12pm to avoid the heaviest crowds.
1. Wander the Mighty Prague Castle
Overlooking the city is the notorious Prague Castle, a massive fortress of winding cobble stoned streets, gothic cathedrals, and medieval architecture the city is so famous for. Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world and contains a small city within its walls. Some of the highlights include the regal St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and Golden Lane. Sign up for a tour for secret insights into this massive castle that dominates the city skyline. The area is huge so be sure to allocate at least 3 hours to half a day to explore it all. If you do one thing in the city, let it be this!
Other Tips for Visiting Prague
- Best Times to visit is during the Spring (April-June) and Fall (September – October) for the mild weather and fewer crowds
- Prague is a very walkable city but the trams and metros are also cheap options for getting around. Just bring comfortable shoes for all the hills and cobble stone streets
- The Czech Koruna (CZK) is the main currency, but majority of places accept credit card
- Czech is the official language but it’s easy to get around in the touristy areas since most people speak English
- Tipping isn’t mandatory but it is common to round up the bill or leave 5-10% in restaurants
- Purchase tickets for Prague Castle and the Original Beer Spa in advance to avoid long queues

Prague is an incredible city beautiful medieval architecture, fascinating history, and an insane night life. And of course, lots and lots of beer. The Czech Republic was our first exposure to Eastern Europe and it made a great impression. The people are friendly, the food is cheap, and the drinks are even cheaper. Hopefully we can explore more of this amazing country soon, but Prague is a special place and has definitely become one of my favorite cities.
