Everything You Need to Know For the Most Magical Trip to Morocco
The Kingdom of Morocco is a vibrant country at the tip of North Africa known for its colorful cities, cultural traditions, and the mighty Sahara Desert. It is famous for having the oldest university and the second oldest continuously ruling dynasty in the world! While it can be a bit hectic at times (not as crazy as Egypt though), The friendly locals and thrilling activities make it an easy gateway to visiting the continent. Here are the essential tips you’ll need to plan the perfect trip to Morocco!

Morocco, a Brief History
Morocco is a complex land integrated with influences from various cultures. The indigenous Amazigh (also known as the Berber) inhabited the region for 5,000 years before it was conquered by Arabs and then colonized by the French. As a result, the official languages of Morocco include Arabic, Berber, and French. The Alaouite Dynasty has been in power since 1631, making it one of the oldest dynasties still around. Morocco gained their independence from France as recently as 1956. Many of the cities in the country have a blend of modern European cafes and traditional Islamic architecture giving it a unique vibe that is fascinating to explore. Here’s a few of the main cities you should consider visiting:
- Marrakech – This is Morocco’s most iconic city, home to bustling souks and the infamous Medina, a maze of narrow medieval alleyways that are just fun getting lost in. Stay tuned for our Marrakech travel guide for the best things to do in the city!
- Rabat – This is Morocco’s capital city known for its modern atmosphere and historical depth.
- Fรจs – Fรจs is the spiritual and intellectual heart of Morocco, home to the world’s oldest university and the planet’s largest car-free medina.
- Casablanca – No not that crappy one in DC, Casablanca is the economic capital of Morocco made famous from that one movie and is the largest city in the country.
- Meknes – Meknes is the last of the 4 imperial cities (including Marrakech, Fรจs, and Rabat), renowned for its uncrowded streets and historical landmarks.

When Should You Visit Morocco?
A better question is when NOT to visit Morocco. Most of the country has a desert climate so unless you’re visiting the coastal cities for a beach vacation, we highly recommend avoiding the summer months. Temperatures can soar way over 110ยฐF for inland cities so it’s not worth it unless you like being burned alive. Even Marrakech during the end of May had average temps of 103ยฐF which made sightseeing brutal. The best time to visit Morocco is either early spring (March – May) or the fall (September – October) when temperatures are mild. Winter can be less crowded and cheaper but it might be slightly chillier, especially if you want to explore the deserts. It is also a good idea to avoid visiting during Ramadan, since many shops and restaurants will be closed. Entry requirements only include a passport for Americans and most countries don’t require a visa.

Best Tips for Visiting Morocco
- The currency is the Moroccan Dirham and while many vendors accept credit cards, we highly recommend having cash. The best place to exchange is at an ATM downtown to avoid getting ripped off at the airport.

- Try to have small bills on you at all times since tipping is expected for almost all services.
- Do not drink water from the faucets, only from bottles. Also avoid sketchy street food and juices since many travelers get sick.
- Don’t forget you can haggle when shopping for almost anything (start at about half of the listed price then go up from there).

- Do not record or photograph people without their permission as most people will get agitated or try to charge you for it.
