Marvelous Activities to Experience in Marrakech, Morocco
If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, then Marrakech is definitely a city that should be high on your list. Marrakech is one of the four imperial cities and the most iconic in the country. Also known as the Red city from its countless sandstone colored buildings, it is famous for the labyrinth of the Medina and lively markets. Here’s the top 10 best things to experience while visiting Marrakech!

10. The Saadian Tombs
One of Marrakech’s best kept secrets and archaeological gems is the necropolis known as the Saadian Tombs. It is an ancient burial ground originally created by the Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in the 16th century. It was rediscovered by French aerial photography in 1917 after years of neglect. Now it has beautifully restored architecture and contains the gravesites for many royal family members and servants. Right next door is El Badi Palace, which lies in ruins and was not recommended to us due to the high entry price and lack of content.

9. Le Jardin Secret
Another hidden gem of Marrakech is the Secret Garden. Also known as Le Jardin Secret, This royal palace has a stunning Islamic & exotic garden hidden right in the heart of the city. This lush sanctuary offers a tranquil oasis from the chaotic streets of the Medina and also has a tower you can climb up. It does cost an extra fee but it’s worth it for the stunning views.

8. Get a Hammam Scrub
If you need a break from the hectic streets and busy markets of Marrakech, then treat yourself to a Moroccan spa day! A Hammam is a traditional communal bathhouse used as a ritual for cleansing and purifying the body. Basically a specialized attendant scrubs the dead skin cells off of you while you relax in a steam room. While only slightly painful, it does leave your skin feeling super soft. There are affordable public bath houses where locals go or luxury establishments to try out. Our Riad also offered a couples hammam experience which only made it slightly less awkward. Plus, did you even go to Marrakech if a large Moroccan lady didn’t scrub you down?
7. Madrasa Ben Youssef
Madrasa Ben Youssef is one of the largest Islamic colleges in Northern Africa and an architectural wonder. It was commissioned in 1564 and housed up to 900 young students during its peak. Now it remains one of the most popular sites in Marrakech as a bastion of elegance and wisdom. For more historical insights into Morocco’s most iconic sites, sign up for this incredible day tour!

6. Bahia Palace
Literally translating to “Brilliance” in Arabic, Bahia Palace is another opulent royal residence with decadent Moroccan decor. Its construction began in the 1860s by the Grand Vizier Si Musa and dedicated to one of his favorite wives (back when it was cool to have multiple). This massive sprawling complex includes mosaic tiles, gardens, fountains, and a huge courtyard. Be sure to reserve your tickets in advance for your desired time slot.

5. Comptoir Darna Dinner Show
Nothing in Marrakech compares to the fine dining experience to be had at Comptoir Darna. The seductive ambiance is almost as sensational as the authentic Moroccan cuisine. Each night includes a choreographed performance with belly dancers, musicians, and more scheduled for 9:30pm and 11:20pm. Make reservations at least a week in advance for guaranteed seating. Stay tuned for our Moroccan food blog for more insight into the country’s delicious cuisine!

4. Sleep in a Traditional Marrakech Riad
My usual motto towards hotel is “I didn’t come here to sleep.” However spending the night in an authentic Riad is just one of those unique experiences you need to have while visiting Morocco. A riad is a traditional residence turned boutique hotel that can be found in the medina of Marrakech. Its layout includes an open air courtyard, decorative mosaic tiles, a fountain, and a garden all hidden behind an unassuming door. We stayed at Riad Dar Hamid Hotel & Spa and had an excellent experience. The average nightly price is around $100 depending on how high end you want to go. Some riads may also include rooftop pools, spas, and other unique amenities.

3. Jardin Majorelle
Jardin Majorelle is an expansive botanical garden created by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over the timespan of 40years. Its area covers over 9,000 square meters of indigenous and exotic plant species including palm trees, cacti, and more. It was doomed to the oblivion of a hotel parking lot but fortunately the famous designer Yves Saint Laurentย saved it from its fated destruction. One of the highlights is the deep blue Oasis Villa which has also been turned into a museum.

2. Get Lost in the Medina of Marrakech
The Medina in Marrakech is the most iconic landmark in the city and marked as a UNESCO World Heritage site. But what exactly is it? The Medina is the ancient medieval area surrounded by the fortified walls of the old city. Within these walls you’ll find the open air square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, countless souks (traditional shops selling spices, leather, lanterns, etc…), hidden riads, and hundreds of narrow alleyways. Think of it as a 900 year old car-less neighborhood at the heart of Marrakech. An excellent reminder that sometimes getting lost is the most important part of the journey.

1. Agafay Desert Excursion from Marrakech
While Morocco is famous for the mighty Sahara Desert, You can also save yourself 8hrs of driving and go to the nearby Agafay Desert instead. While only about 40mins from Downtown Marrakech, it also offers stunning natural landscapes and thrilling activities to enjoy. The rocky desert terrain makes it a great atmosphere for ATV riding, camel Riding, and watching the sunset over the Atlas Mountains. Sign up for an epic day tour for all these exciting adventures plus a Moroccan feast & fire show! It was very similar to the desert excursion we experienced in Dubai, but with a Moroccan flair.

Marrakech is a vibrant city with beautiful architecture, bustling streets, and wild natural landscapes. The cohesive blend of tradition and modernity emanate an air of euphoria that comes even more alive at night. It is one of the best cities in Morocco and we highly recommend planning a trip.
