Legends of the incredible flavors of Thai cuisine have spread far across the world. So we traveled to all the various regions of Thailand to find out if it lived up to the hype. Spoiler alert, it does! Thai food is a vibrant blend of exotic flavors, sweet, spicy, savory, and sour all in one bite. It’s impossible to turn a corner without smelling the aroma of something delicious sizzling up. Whether you’re trying eccentric street food or dining at a luxury restaurant, Thai cuisine never disappoints. Follow our Thailand food tour so you know exactly which signature dishes to try on your next trip!

1. Pad Thai – Thailand’s Signature Noodle Dish
Of course we had to start the Thailand food tour with the country’s national dish; Pad Thai! Even if you came to Thailand and only ate Pad Thai every single day until you left, your culinary journey here would be a success. This legendary dish includes rice noodles with shrimp, tofu, tamarind, and crunchy peanuts doused in lime juice. We ate a ton of Pad Thai, but none compared to the unparalleled flavors at Thipsamai in Bangkok. This is the best food in the country so we recommend trying it as often as you can!

2. Khao Soi – A Spicy Northern Thailand Specialty
Khao Soi is an iconic meal that is popular in the northern region and one of our favorite cities, Chiang Mai. This Thai curry noodle soup is bathed in a rich coconut curry broth, topped with crispy egg noodles, a piece of chicken, and a squeeze of lime. It can be spicy but is an essential addition to any Thailand food tour.

3. Mango Sticky Rice – The Divine Dessert
If you’re searching to satisfy a sweet tooth than look no further than the ubiquitous dessert that embodies the soul of Thai cuisine. Mango sticky rice is a serving of sticky-sweet glutinous rice, fresh mangoes, and topped with coconut cream in a blend of indulgence. You can find it almost everywhere but surprisingly one of our favorites was at Dang in Phuket.
4. Pad Kra Pao Moo – Minced Pork & Thai Basil Stir-fry
For one of the Best Thai street food options, Pad Kra Pao Moo is an undefeated option. It is a plate of stir-fried pork with Thai holy basil and a fried egg on top. It is a little spicy but one of our go-to favorites in Thailand.

5. Khao Pad – Simple Yet Satisfying Thai Fried Rice
What is Khao Pad? It is a classic rice dish perfect for the less adventurous foodies and a solid choice if you’re not sure what to order. This Thailand food staple comes speckled with egg, onions, veggies, and your protein of choice.

6. Thai Curries: Yellow, Red, Green – For the Spice Seekers
Welcoming all spice lovers, Thailand food has exactly what your heart desires. Thai cuisine is renowned for its diversity and intensity of spices evident in its various curries and seasonings. If you’re looking to start a 5-alarm fire in your mouth, then these curries might be for you:
Yellow Curry is mellow and turmeric-rich, perfect with potatoes and chicken. This is the least spicy of the curry with a mild kick. Our favorite was at the Michelin starred One Chun Cafe & Restaurant in Phuket.
Red Curry brings the heat and depth. For those looking to elevate their spice game to another level of heat. It’s hot!
Green Curry is the firecrackerโherbaceous, spicy, and unapologetic. The spiciest of them all, only taste this one if you’re willing to risk it all for the inevitable burn.

7. Tom Yum Goong – The Fiery Shrimp Elixir
If you haven’t had enough of the spice, then grab a bowl of this fiery soup as an appetizer. Tom Yum Goong is a shrimp soup, swirling with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and a searing chili kick. It’s Hot. It’s Sour. It’s Citrusy. And Briny.

8. Tom Kha Gai โ The Silkiest Chicken Soup on Earth
Now for an underrated dish that might just be one of the best Thai soups. Tom Kha Gai is a creamy coconut milk base, layered with galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and tender chicken. Its fiery sibling Tom Yum might get most of the attention, but this soothing, zesty, and soul-warming bowl should be given a chance.

9. Som Tam – Papaya With a Punch
Som Tam is a spicy green papaya salad with a mix of many powerful flavors. It’s spicy, yet refreshing, and sour yet sweet. This northeastern favorite is shredded green papaya pounded with chili, lime, fish sauce, and peanuts in a mortar and pestle.

10. Thai-Style Crab Omelette – Made by the Legendary Jay Fai
Searching for some cheap Michelin street food in Thailand? The Legendary Jay Fai Bangkok Crab Omelets might be the experience to try. Apparently you have to be there by 7am to add your name to the waitlist and then wait another 2 hours to sit, but the taste is phenomenal and might just be worth it. Bangkokโs flame-goggled street food queen makes a transcendent fusion of golden, pillowy eggs bursting with juicy crab meat.

11. Moo Ping – Charcoal-Grilled Bliss on a Stick
One of the thrills of going on a Thailand food tour is the eccentric street foods you’ll randomly stumble across. And nothing is more symbolic of Thailand’s street food scene than Moo Ping. These smokey grilled pork skewers are marinated in garlic, palm sugar, and fish sauce. Night markets in Thailand are notorious for finding anything and everything on a stick, from octopus to scorpions so embrace the foodie adventure!

12. Pad See Ew
During the quest for the best Thai stir-fry noodles, we wandered across a local favorite. Pad See Ew is a broad noodle soaked in dark soy sauce with Chinese broccoli and thin slices of pork or chicken. The texture is a a bit too slimy for me but its still worth a try.

Travelers from all around the world flock to Thailand to experience the gastronomic greatness of its iconic meals. Of course Pad Thai reigns supreme as the best dish in the country, but there are endless amounts of delicious street food and contrasting flavors that are sure to please the palette. Especially for spicy food lovers! So if the idea of ending each super cheap meal (think around $2 USD) with a plate of mango sticky rice invigorates you, use this Thailand food tour guide on your next trip!
