5 Most Thrilling Experiences to Enjoy a Weekend in Kauai
Kauai is the oldest island in Hawaii, being formed over 5 million years ago. It’s also one of the smallest and least densely populated islands in the archipelago with over 90% of the land being undeveloped. This island is the perfect destinations for those looking for dramatic landscapes and mountainous scenery. Kauai is Nicknamed the “Garden Isle” for its dense tropical vegetation, rainforests, and abundant flowers. Here’s the top 5 most exciting experiences to have on a weekend in Kauai.

5. Fly Over Kauai in a Helicopter Tour
The most thrilling and efficient way to see all the inaccessible regions of Kauai is on a helicopter ride. There are so many landscapes including hidden valleys, waterfalls, and Nฤ Pali cliffs that can only be experienced from above. Sign up for a helicopter tour to experience this extreme sightseeing adventure. Although we’ve been on 2 other helicopter rides (over New York City and a volcano in Iceland) this one is on a whole other level. It may be expensive, but its worth it.
4. Spot Turtles at Poipu Beach State Park
Can you believe that despite being the smallest of the main islands, Kauai actually has more beaches than any other island in Hawaii? And one of these beaches happens to be the most reliable place to spot green sea turtles. Poipu beach is located on Kauai’s southern shore and the calm waters make it great for swimming and snorkeling. Stay for the sunset and you will also be treated to a wave of sea turtles washing up on the shore. We saw dozens of them! Just be sure to maintain a safe distance from them (10ft).

3. Kayak to Secret Waterfalls
Kauai is notorious for its plethora of hidden natural landmarks. Head on an adventure to the Secret Waterfall to discover a jungle oasis like no other. This tour takes you on a journey to the Uluwehi Falls on a route that is only accessible by kayaking 4 miles and hiking 1.5 miles to reach. Be sure to bring bug spray, lots of water, and the right hiking shoes to combat the mud and water.
2. Gaze upon the Mighty Waimea Canyon
For one of the most epic sights on all of Hawaii, a trip to Waimea Canyon is a must. Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, with its unique geology formed from a mixture of erosion and a cataclysmic collapse of the volcano that formed Kauai. The 3,000ft cliffs offer stunning views of the green and red hues of the valley below. You have to drive up a windy and hazardous road (although nowhere near as bad as Maui’s Road to Hana) to reach the top but its worth it. While you’re up there, consider stopping by the Kalalau Lookout for more insane views.

1. Ride a Zodiac Raft Along the Na Pali Coast
Look at any travel guide for Kauai and the top of every list will be an excursion to the Na Pali coast. Located on the north-western side of the island, the Na Pali Coast is a jagged, undeveloped Mountainous region filled with marine life, sea caves, and crashing waves. The best way to experience it is on a Zodiac rafting tour that takes you up close to the action. We recommend planning your trip for the summer for calmer waters and higher chances of being able to travel through the treacherous sea caverns. While the ride is extremely turbulent, there are a few moments of tranquility where you can admire the sights or go swimming. Nothing strikes fear into the heart quite like staring into the eternal abyss of the deep sea. If you are prone to motion sickness, definitely take some Dramamine.

Kauai is unique among the other Hawaiian islands as it is almost exclusively reserved for adventure tourism. Many of the most breathtaking natural landscapes can all be found on this one tiny island. Be warned that aside from nature activities, there isn’t much else to do on Kauai. There are very limited other options for entertainment, shopping, and restaurants with most closing early. 2 to 3 days should be enough to explore the main highlights of the island.
