Fantastic Experiences in France’s Food Capital
Despite being the 3rd largest metropolis in France, Lyon usually gets overlooked. Although Lyon is much smaller than Paris, it is loaded with roman ruins, medieval churches, and thousands of years of history. The abundance of resources has granted it the status of France’s Gastronomy Capital. In addition to the authentic Lyonnaise food you’ll find world class museums too. Lyon is about 2 hours south of Paris, and can easily be reached by train. 2 to 3 days should be enough to experience the city’s highlights and try your fill of delicious cuisines. Here’s our top 10 picks for the best things to do while in Lyon.
10. Place Bellecour
At the center of the city you’ll find the largest plaza in Lyon as well as one of the largest open squares in all of Europe. There’s not much to actually do in the square, but the surrounding views are great. Take a stroll the the middle of Lyon to get a sense the city’s ambiance.
9. Lyon Cathedral
Located in the heart of Old Lyon is the Lyon Cathedral, aka Saint Jean Cathedral. Its imposing Roman-Catholic architecture is beautifully designed and is an iconic landmark across the city. It’s also close to a plethora of restaurants and shops which makes it quite a busy area. It’s free to visit inside so be sure to check it out.
8. Musée des Confluences
Despite being a bit out of the way from the city center, the Musée des Confluences is still worth the visit. Considered the science centre of Lyon, this anthropology museum tells the story of mankind and the history of life. Get your tickets online here.
7. Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
This remarkable indoor food market offers some of the finest selection of high quality French food from across the region. Here you can try fresh seafood, meats, cheeses, croissants, and the best Tarte aux praline Lyon has to offer. Just keep in mind many shops are closed on Mondays, and also open much later than restaurants back home. We waited till around 10am for vendors to open up!
6. Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere
France has no shortage of extravagant basilicas. It seems like every city has its own “Notre Dame” church raising into the sky. The Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere is Lyon’s most iconic monument, and overlooks the entire city from a high cliff. I recommend taking the funicular to the top which is only a couple of Euros. The views from the top offer the best views of Lyon.
5. Theatres Romains de Fourviere
While you’re up on the hill, stop by the ancient Roman ruins just a short walk from the basilica. This Roman ampitheater is about 2,000 years old and conveys the rich history imbedded into Lyon’s past. I was pleasantly surprised to find archeological structures this far out of Rome. Best of all, it is free to visit so spend as much time here as you wish!
4. Vieux Lyon
Vieux Lyon is considered the heart of the city. Its cobble stoned streets, authentic restaurants, and vintage architecture perfectly portray the atmosphere of Old Lyon. No trip is complete without wandering its winding alley ways. Scattered around the district are the infamous traboules, a hidden network of passageways used by the silk workers of old. There are as many as 400 throughout the area, however only 40 are publicly open. To find these secret paths, keep an eye out for big wooden doors marked with a peculiar symbol and hold the silver button to access it. Here’s a map to help you on your hunt!
3. Buchon Lyonnais
It’s no surprise that the capital of gastronomy would focus on eating as a priority. Lyon is a foodie haven, and contains a selected few Buchons with world class menus and quality ingredients. Only about 22 restaurants are certified Buchons, where you can try the best Lyon specialties around. Here’s a list of the eateries that have bestowed Lyon’s notoriety as the food capital of France. 2. Musée Cinéma et Miniature
Aside from its prestigious food scene, the cinematograph was also created in Lyon. This explains why such a small city has some of the most prominent props in the entire movie industry. The affordable ticket includes entry into the cinema museum and the deceptively realistic miniature museum, both with equally captivating and delightful galleries. You’ll find famous pop culture memorabilia such as, Batman & Spiderman’s suits, Harry Potter’s wand & glasses, The triceratops head from Jurassic Park, the Alien Queen model, and so much more. The Musée Cinéma et Miniature is a hidden gem definitely worth checking out.
1. A Lyon Food Tour
The best way to experience the true Lyon is through an in-depth guided food tour. Along with expert travel guides, you’ll understand how the blend of culture and traditions is derived from Lyonnais cuisine. The tour takes you through various shops where you learn the intricacies of the ingredients from local owners, each a master of their craft. It includes wine, cheese, meats, chocolate, liquors, and a certified Buchon Lyonnais tasting, so be sure to arrive on an empty stomach! I can’t imagine a better way to learn the history of the city while also enjoying delicious food. Keep in mind they are unavailable on Mondays!
Lyon is a true foodie’s paradise and a must see for history lovers. Although it’s not a big as Paris or Marseilles, Lyon contains tons of interesting history and beautiful sights. If you’re fortunate enough to visit during the festival of lights (usually around December 8th), the city will be illuminated with colorful explosions of light unlike anywhere else. A trip to Lyon is a must for any France Itinerary. Thanks for reading and keep leveling up!
