Santa Fe was founded as a Spanish colony in the 1600s, and now stands as the capital of New Mexico. The charming narrow streets and adobe architecture make it the most unique place in the state. The city captivates the soul with its unique blend of history, art, and natural beauty. If you’re visiting Albuquerque, Santa Fe makes as fantastic day trip. Here are the top 10 best things to do with 24 hours in the city!

The Railyard boasts an eclectic mix of art galleries, trendy boutiques, and inviting cafes. It is also home to the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, a vibrant emporium where locals and tourists converge to explore the dazzling array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, and local delicacies. The market has various hours of operations, but is open year round on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm.

9. Canyon Road Arts District

The Canyon Road Arts District is a treasure trove of over a hundred galleries, showcasing everything from traditional Southwestern art to contemporary masterpieces. Don’t miss the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, celebrating the iconic artist’s life and work. This half mile stretch really showcases the city’s thriving arts scene.

8. San Miguel Chapel, The Oldest Church in the Country

The San Miguel Chapel is a timeless gem nestled in the heart of historic Santa Fe and a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in the Southwest. Known as the oldest church in the United States, this adobe sanctuary holds centuries of stories within its walls. While not as fabulous as the cathedrals in Spain, the San Miguel chapel still has its own unique charm. Don’t forget to hit the bell on the way out to bless your return to the city!

7. Loretto Chapel & its Mysterious Spiral Staircase

There’s no shortage of ornate churches in Santa Fe. The Loretto Chapel is another iconic one known for its miraculous spiral staircase. Legend states an unknown carpenter constructed the staircase without a central support using only basic tools and then vanished without a trace. Inside the chapel is pretty nice, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the $5 entrance fee.

6. Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, Another Santa Fe Iconic Church

Also known as Saint Francis Cathedral, this revered edifice is a cornerstone of the city’s religious and cultural identity. Built between 1869 and 1886 on the site of two earlier churches, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a masterpiece of Romanesque Revival architecture that contains impressive towers. The cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Santa Fe is located downtown, just a few minutes walk from the other major attractions.

This rotunda shaped building is the 3rd newest capitol in the country, despite Santa Fe being America’s oldest capital city. One of the world’s greatest contributions to breakfast cuisine is the breakfast burrito, which just happens to originate right here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This iconic creation is a fusion of traditional flavors and encapsulates the spirit of the region’s gastronomic innovation. Breakfast Burritos typically include scrambled eggs, savory bacon or chorizo, diced potatoes, and a generous helping of cheese, all bundled up in a warm tortilla. Tia Sofia’s Restaurant claims to be so the first to put it on a menu, so naturally its the best place to try it. Stay tuned for our New Mexican Food Blog for even more delicious food in the region!

2. Bandelier National Monument

Located about an hour north of Santa Fe, Bandelier National Monument is a mesmerizing archaeological site that unveils the ancient mysteries of the Pueblo people. The park lets you explore the cave dwellings of the ancestral Puebloans that are surrounded by jagged cliffs. With its scenic beauty and cultural significance, Bandelier is a fascinating natural landscape steeped in the spirit of the past. Definitely one of the best national parks I’ve been to.
